Through the Biopsychosocial lens.
When you want to improve your health and fitness—whether that means building muscle, increasing strength, enhancing cardiovascular health, boosting athletic performance, losing weight, or all of the above—it's important to recognize how various aspects of your life work together to influence your results.
Many people think of load management solely in terms of the physical stuff. While logical programming that's tailored to you is key to reaching results sooner and eliminating time waste, they are only part of the bigger picture.
This is where the biopsychosocial model comes into play.
The biopsychosocial model looks through 3 distinct lenses : biological, psychological, and social factors. These factors may sound separable on paper but in reality they are interconnected processes, systems of systems working globally.
Lets dive in...
Biological Factors: These include the physical and genetic elements that affect your health, such as your genes, brain chemistry, and overall physical condition.
Psychological Factors: This aspect looks at your emotions, thoughts, and mental health. Key components include how you handle stress, your coping skills, and your personality traits.
Social Factors: These involve your relationships, social support, and cultural background. Your environment—including your family dynamics, financial situation, and community—can greatly shape your behaviors.
The biopsychosocial model teaches us that our being is influenced by all these factors working together. For a practical example, if you injure your knee (biological), it doesn't just affect your ability to exercise; it impacts your mood (psychological) and could even strain your relationships (social). Or, if someone is rude to you, it affects more than just your mental state; it can influence your physical health or social interactions, too. Recognising this interconnectedness helps you understand why various aspects of your life can affect your results and overall well-being.
By seeing the bigger picture, you can make more informed choices and overcome obstacles on your journey. Whether you aim for strength, muscle growth, or weight loss, keep in mind that your overall health and results are a complex mix of many influences. Addressing all aspects of your life will help you achieve greater success toward your goals.
Load management is as much to do with your logical programming strategy's as it is with your.... human.
P.S. If you're reading this blog, you likely have the ability to change various aspects of your life, even those that seem difficult or complex—including key elements of the biopsychosocial model. Our brains and bodies are adaptable (thanks to neuroplasticity and bioplasticity), meaning we can learn and modify our behaviors. By intentionally altering our daily actions, we can influence our biological, psychological, and social factors creating change at the cellular and genetic level.
